Please note that in this abridged version for the internet we do not normally give out  members' last names, personal addresses, phone numbers or directions to their homes.  Since guests are always welcome, if you wish to participate in one of our events please contact our Newsletter Director and request the full unabridged newsletter by mail or email so that you will have not only the detailed information you need to make reservations but also complete directions to get to the events you wish to attend.

… September 2010 Activities…

Monday, September 6th Labor Day Picnic at Mt. Lebanon Park Pavilion #2 at 2:00PM.
 
If you don't like benches bring your lawn chair for comfort.  There are 10 picnic tables that seat 10 each. Card tables are welcomed if you want to play cards. Water pump is close by. Two grills - we have charcoal and lighter fluid, but need someone to volunteer to get it going starting about 1:30PM for eating at 3PM.
Lots of parking. Setup people meet at 1PM, bring some newspaper for the tables, we will have tablecloths.
Guest fee: $5.00.
Members get in FREE with a dish
to serve 8 people: (2:00PM:appetizer, be there early; 3:00PM: beans, salads, fruit, vegetables dishes to go with AUP’s beef hotdogs; or 4:00PM: desserts. (If possible some of the leftovers will be frozen for the Sept. 13th FMH meeting of AUP).
Alcohol is NOT permitted at this park.
After dessert the games begin. There will be bocci, scrabble, bridge, dominoes,--bring your favorite if not mentioned. There is a nice grassy spot for lawn games.

Off Cedar Blvd in Mt. Lebanon, 15228 turn in at the Tennis Courts
From Pgh: follow Rte. 19 So. into Mt Lebanon Business Dist. to Cedar Blvd. Take Cedar Blvd through the light at Cochran Rd., to next light ( just past tennis courts.), turn Left go past Rec. Center to large parking lot.
Pavilion #2 is just up the hill from the end of this parking lot. If it is full continue up the hill pass the Pavilion #2 into a parking lot on your Right.
From the South: Take Gilkeson Rd. pass the Galleria Mall to Cedar Blvd in your Right Lane you will be forced to turn onto Cedar Blvd. When you see the Mt. Lebanon Tennis Courts turn Right to the Rec. Center parking lot. If this lot is full see the bold print above: Pavilion #2…

Take I-79 to Exit 78: PA-228. Take PA-228 West, toward Cranberry (Left or right turn depending on where you are coming from) for 0.3 miles to US19/Perry Highway. Turn Right onto US19/Perry Highway for 1.2 miles. Go slow so you don’t miss it. The restaurant is next door to the Comtra Theater.

 Saturday, September 11th--  Singles Dance at “The Chadwick” in Wexford—8:00 PM  The Chadwick is hosting this popular singles dance in the North Hills area. Always New Faces, Always An Amazing Time! Free dance lesson at 7:30, dance begins at 8:00 PM.                                                    
 Cost:$8.00.

From South: Take I 79 to Wexford exit 73. Bear right onto rt. 910 East. Go approximately 2 miles to 4-way stop sign and turn right. At next stop sign turn right onto Rt. 19 South. At light where McDonalds is on right turn right. Turn first right behind McDonalds and large building is at end of driveway. If coming through town, follow I 279 to I 79 and follow above directions.

 Monday, September 13th-- AUP Monthly Meeting at  Friends Meeting House (FMH) in Oakland
Meet and greet at 7:00PM.  Program 7:30:
 Come join us for a great fun evening. Free! Free! Free!
Banjo-All-Stars will play all the "oldies" we remember. Plan to be entertained as we sing along with the Banjo-All Stars.
Cost: FREE.
  Light refreshments will be served..
Directions:  Follow signs to 376E (parkway) Take Oakland Exit (Forbes Ave.) and follow Forbes to Morewood (CMU area.)  Turn Left, cross 5th Ave. to Ellsworth.  Turn Left, go 1 ½ blocks to FMH (Friend’s Meeting House) on your left. Address is 4836 Ellsworth Avenue, Pittsburgh. 412-683-2669. A small parking lot is available as well as unmetered street parking Do carpool if possible
Directions from the North on 279S: follow it NOT 579 to Ft. Duquesne Bridge, then bear Left to 376E and follow directions above.

 Sunday, September 19th Lasagna Party  at Tony P’s in Delmont – 2:00 PM
Since so many of you enjoyed the previous Pasta Parties at Tony’s, we are bringing it back only this time. Tony will offer his homemade lasagna along with appetizers and for dessert, tiramisu
Cost is $5 for members and $10 for guests which includes food and soft drinks. BYOB if you choose to. Dinner will be served between 3:00 and 4:00 PM.

Directions from the Pittsburgh area:, Take the Parkway East (I-376) to its end and merge onto US22 East towards Murrysville (or from the North, take the Turnpike to the Pittsburgh Interchange (Exit 57) and then merge onto US22 East). Proceed on US22 East for about 8½ miles. When you see the large Watson Chevrolet sign on the left at a red light intersection, turn left onto Manor Road. Follow Manor Road for about 1¼ miles. Immediately after passing the Apple Hill Playhouse on the right, make a left onto Apple Hill Drive. Tony’s house, 273 Apple Hill Drive is about a half mile down the road on the right hand side.  if you need help in finding your way.

 Meet and Greet, 6:30. Discussion at 7:00 PM.
Welcome back to book club! This is our organizational meeting for the next leg of our journey together. Join us with your reading suggestions for the coming eleven months and expect to share ideas in a friendly, food-filled environment—mental and real. While your presence and participation are always important to us, both are especially important at this planning meeting. Try to make it.
Please bring a small snack to share.

Dr. C. R. Thomas will present TEMPLE GRANDIN
, the 100-min., PG film of Claire Danes’ portrayal of an autistic young woman’s academic journey to complete her Ph.D. in animal science.  David Strathaim plays Dr. Grandin’s most important science professor mentor. Without a doubt, as a viewer you will be impressed with Danes—once named by People magazine as “one of the 50 most beautiful women in the world”—playing a nerdy, creative animal science expert with different paradigms about how to treat animals.

NOTE: Our video group meets monthly to socialize and enjoy a film selected and shown by one of the AUP members. Volunteers are needed now to share a favorite film. Please contact Lin ( 412-491-7538 cell) if you would like to present one of your favorites in Oct. or Nov. You do not have to use your own home unless desired. Homes are available in both the South and the East.
